Galijan/Chan doubles team advances to WCAL Day 2

Daily News (11/5/09)

WCAL showdown

The Notre Dame-Belmont girls tennis team had not advanced anyone to Day 2 of the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs in more than five years. That streak ended Wednesday at Cuesta Park in Mountain View as the third-seeded doubles tandem of Laura Galijan and Sharlene Chang reached today’s semifinals.

“I believe that getting to the semifinals was a start,” Notre Dame coach Jason Levin said. “Just making it to the second day of this toptier tournament was outstanding for our team and for our players.”

Galijan and Chang defeated teammates Danielle Perez and Kristi Neu in the Round of 16. Next in line is the top-seeded team from St. Francis-Mountain View, Mary Closs and Angela Pratt.

Semis start at 9 a.m. today with finals at 1 p.m.

In the singles bracket, St. Francis also has the top seed in senior Kelly Chiu, who ended the magical run of Notre Dame senior Alice Wang. A No. 4 singles player for the Tigers, Wang started the day by upsetting Valley Christian’s top singles player, seeded eighth, and winning again before falling in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-0.

“Today was by far her best tennis in three years,” Levine said. “She went out gunslingling and playing some great tennis.”
